Once You Know Better, You Have To Do Better.
Though we began as a group of citizens concerned for the safety of our community, our mission has since expanded. When we first began, we set up a hotline. This hotline was initially set up as a way for people to call in, ask questions, and provide tips about activities they may be witnessing within the community that may be a safety concern. This would allow everyone to be engaged, connected, and participate in being the eyes and ears of the neighborhood. Once we set up our hotline, 844-533-3362, we quickly started realizing that something far bigger was growing.
At the height of the riots, we were receiving over 1,00 calls a day. Some calls even came from over seas, as people were concerned about how their loved ones were doing. Many calls were from people watching the media in awe, and panicking about what was happening. Concerned parents called and asked us to drive by their children’s homes. Elderly called when they heard something outside their window. Business owners asked us to make an extra loop past their business, in order to provide an extra deterrent from crimes of opportunity. We behaved by the simple premise of, “See something.; say something.” We became both a filter for fear, as well as a translator for those who may not be able to effectively communicate with the police due to a language barrier.
As things began to quiet down, the calls continued, but the type of calls we received began to change. While our primary calls were still related to safety, we also began getting calls regarding a number of other issues. As we started to see patterns in the types of calls we received, we would seek out partners and resources to address these calls.

Much of our community is immigrant based, and many of them are 1st generation with limited verbal skills. As calls came in, we realized we can act as a bridge for these individuals to help put them in touch with any resources they may need.
